Thank you to Professor Cotter and the staff at St Bart's for this moving tribute to William.
Dr William Tong
Consultant Virologist and Lead for Division of Infection Barts Health
Honorary Reader – Queen Mary University London School of Medicine
RCPath Chief Examiner for Virology
Sadly on the 2nd May 2018, William Tong died unexpectedly. It is a great loss to the Trust, to Infection services, to Pathology at Barts Health, and the world of Virology. He led the Infection team in Pathology with genuine regard. His calm and effective manner was respected but more importantly he was accepted with true affection. Many of his colleagues counted him also as a friend and someone who worked hard for everyone and always with a gentle smile.
He was an excellent teacher and educator for trainees and colleagues alike, and well respected among peers as an examiner for the college of pathologists. He was highly respected among colleagues both within this organisations and outside. William whose life has suddenly been lost was an exceptional person.
All of us will miss him greatly, but not more so than his wife and family to whom we extend our condolences. It will take some time for loss to sink in and I appreciate that many of us in Pathology and the Hospital will miss him and wish to remember him and all he gave to us.
He was a great doctor and lovely man.
